Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the right to question certain rulings made by the official, following the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
