British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
